Eftychios Alexandrakis, described as the oldest merchant in Athens and one of the city’s most honorable and noble personalities, died on Wednesday morning. He was 98.
Alexandrakis was the owner of the historic family business of Ermou Street; the capital’s major shopping street. The Alexandrakis store was founded in 1860.
An emblematic figure of Ermou; his vitality and unparalleled style were well known.
The store was moved to its current address, Ermou 27, by Dimitris Alexandrakis; father of Eftychios, in 1933.
The building was designed by architect Stamos Papadakis; its characteristic architecture inspired by the Bauhaus period, and its highly crafted interiors are a jewel in the heart of Athens.
With the successful management of Alexandrakis, the store overcame the difficulties of the Second World War and established itself as a commercial company offering high quality imported products.
The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry has awarded Alexandrakis the “Business and Tradition” award.
