A 62-year-old man arrested on Sunday for shooting dead a dog he said had killed his rabbits has been charged and released.
A 53-year-old from Paphos reported that he had seen one of his dogs injured near the house of the older man, while the second was found dead in his yard.
The 62-year-old said the two dogs had got into his yard and killed his rabbits. He said he tried to get rid of the dogs by throwing water on them but they became aggressive and afraid they would attack, he shot them.
Police are also looking into whether the 53-year-old had taken necessary precautions to secure his dogs.
He said that the two dogs got out when he was not looking and a gate in their enclosure was open.
The injured dog was taken to a vet for treatment while the dead dog and three dead rabbits were taken away by the veterinary department.
The dog’s death was caused by a hunting rifle shot while the three rabbits had dog bite marks on them.
Following the incident on Sunday, the Animal Party called for authorities to re-examine the “irrational and illegal use of guns by irresponsible and dangerous citizens”.
