Rescued young Griffon vulture released back into wild (video)

A young Griffon Vulture found stranded and in distress at Episkopi Bay two months ago has been released back into the wild, BirdLife Cyprus said on its Facebook page.

Now an online poll is on to pick a name between Zoe or Nepheli.

The young vulture was found wet, in distress and unable to fly  by a BirdLife Cyprus volunteer at Episkopi Bay in early September.  The Game and Fauna Service as well as the SBA Environmental Department were alerted. They were able to reach the stranded bird from the sea with the help of a private boat owner, and rescue it.

The bird was taken to the Game and Fauna Service Rehabilitation Centre where it spent more than a month recovering. It was then ringed, tagged and successfully released.

“After five days of worry whether it will be reunited with its fellow vultures, the GPS tag is now transmitting from the vulture colony and in fact, right next to another Griffon Vulture, that was also tagged, ringed and released on the same day,” BirdLife Cyprus added.
