A 27 year old man was killed in a violent collision on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway near the Moutayiaka exit early on Thursday morning.
The victim was named as Panayiotis Christoforou.
The car he was driving was rammed from the back by a car driven by a 50 year old foreign national.
The driver of the second vehicle was seriously injured and taken to Limassol Hospital.
]The collision occurred at around 1 am. Limassol traffic police chief Michail Michail said that the 50 year old is believed to have been speeding. This will be determined by investigations which resumed with the first light of day.
Michail said that as the 27 year old’s car was heading towards Limassol, it was hit from the back by the car driven by the 50 year old. The collision was violent, and the car collided repeatedly on the metal barrier on the motorway and came to a stop about 200 metres away.
The victim was killed instantly. Michail said that police a blood sample will be taken from the driver of the second vehicle to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
Because of the accident, a section of the Nicosia-Limassol highway remains closed.
