The Consumer Protection Service is carrying out a safety campaign in the run-up to Christmas focusing on children’s toys.
The campaign, which started on Tuesday and will continue until December 16, will cover more than 100 retail toy outlets islandwide with a view to locating and withdrawing from the market children’s toys which are non-compliant. It will also cover 20 premises with automated vending machines with children’s toys.
Moreover, the service said it will continue to raise public awareness about health and safety. A new ‘advice for a safe Christmas’ leaflet has been posted on its website (www.consumer.gov.cy) with tips on now to prevent accidents frequently observed in the festive season. Also available on its site in an information leaflet regarding the dangers to children aged under three from small objects.

Last year, after similar checks at at 119 shops over the period November 19 to December 14.
In 15 cases toys were found to be dangerous and/or did not meet the necessary requirements and were withdrawn. In 21 cases the toys did not fully comply with law and instructions were given for corrective measures.
In 29 other cases the Service gave warnings to shops’ owners regarding their products.
It also checked 18 premises with automated vending machines with children’s toys and in 11 cases gave instructions for corrective measures.
