A 21 year old Greek Cypriot man suspected of abusing an 18 year old Romanian man was remanded in custody for eight days on Tuesday.
The suspect appeared before Limassol district court without a lawyer and did not object to the remand.
Citing sources, Philenews said that the two youths had met and were friends at school until the suspect left school for his military service.
They lost touch until August 2019 when the 21 year old contacted the 18 year old on Facebook and the two arranged to meet.
They first met at a park and continued to meet, with the 21 year old allegedly hitting the 18 year old every time.
The site said that the 21 year old reportedly took the younger man on his motorbike to remote locations where he hit him and obliged him to take off his clothes and then burned him with a lighter all over the body. He also said he had received death threats.
The victim’s mother noticed the bruises on her son’s face and body and questioned what had happened after which the youth accompanied by his father filed a complaint with police.
He is currently in the burns unit of Nicosia Hospital where his condition is described as serious but out of danger.
