In Cyprus, gap in pay between men and women for equal work amounts to 13.7%, Gender Equality Commissioner Iosifina Antoniou said in a message on today’s European Equality Day.
She says the disparity is so great that in practice a man earns almost two more salaries each year for the same job as a woman. That is, women in Europe have been working unpaid for the last two months of the year, the Commissioner said.
Women in the European Union continue to earn on average 16% less than men, while in Cyprus the last recorded (2017) gap in pay between men and women equals 13.7%. This means he said, “for every € 100 paid by an average man, a woman is paid only an average of € 86.30.”
The Gender Equality Commissioner stresses that the pay gap between men and women is mainly due to the professional segregation and gender discrimination of women.
