The medical school of the University of Nicosia announces the establishment of the ultrasound institute with the aim of providing medical students, clinical faculty and practising physicians with the opportunity to develop and apply ultrasonography skills to primary care.
The institute will work in cooperation with the corresponding ultrasound institute of the University of South Carolina (USC) as part of the existing agreement between the medical school and USC for developing collaborative opportunities in the areas of research and education.
The institute will be dedicated to providing medical students with a well‐balanced curriculum, which will include classroom instruction, laboratory training and supervised clinical experience. The aim is to produce graduates with the necessary ultrasonography knowledge and confidence.
It will develop and implement an array of continuing professional development courses, beginning with an introduction to point of care ultrasound. This course will be appropriate for providers who are new to point of care ultrasound and to those in need of a refresher course. In addition, the Institute will be supporting the needs of the University of Nicosia primary care centre.
Research programmes will be developed and submitted to national and European funding agencies. Through its partnership with the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research, the ultrasound institute will aim to develop a research network and research proposals.
