A boat carrying 28 migrants including nine children arrived early on Thursday in Cape Greco.
According to police, a police boat spotted the migrants and then moved swiftly to the area to carry out a rescue mission. At around 10am they escorted their boat to the Ayios Nicolas fishing harbour in Golden Coast area of Protaras.
Irregular migration in the island has risen this year, with the majority being Syrian refugees, entering the republic from the south or from the north.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Wednesday if Cyprus keeps receiving migrants asking for asylum, their number is set to exceed 3.5 per cent of the population, corresponding to 100,000 asylum seekers.
Petrides viewed the high numbers in a negative light arguing that “there will be times when the numbers are such that one cannot easily handle the situation”.
