What is the difference between leadership and management? When is leadership needed and when management? Is a leader necessarily a good manager?
These and many more questions were discussed and analysed during a conference which was recently co-organised between the ministry of defence, staff of the national guard and the University of Nicosia, entitled ‘Leadership and management’.
In his introductory speech, Defence Minister Savvas Angelides pointed out that “in an ever-changing environment in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean, it is imperative that our executives be able to cope with the challenges of a modern battlefield.” He also stressed that new military technologies could influence the existing balance of power.
Two thematic sections followed. In the first section, Colonel John Jacob Neal, a graduate of the US Military School of the United States, spoke on ‘Modern warfare – especially in an asymmetric situation where there is an imbalance of powers,’ and Constantinos Adamides, assistant professor and director of the diplomatic academy of the University of Nicosia, spoke on ‘Examples of modern wars’.
In the second section, Amos Harel, journalist, writer and expert on Israeli military issues, spoke on the subject: ‘How do you prepare for a modern war’, followed by brigadier Abraham Efrati’s speech on ‘Military leadership in the age of the Internet and social media – how we start today’.
