The neurosurgical society on Thursday urged its members not to join the National Health Scheme (Gesy) citing the belief that the proposed scheme did not guarantee quality healthcare.
The organisation said in a written statement that taking into account the seriousness of the cases they face both chronic and urgent, they believe that a well-planned health scheme would help both patients and doctors.
“The proposed health scheme unfortunately presents several pitfalls that do not ensure quality medical care for patients, much more so for patients who require neurosurgical care,” the group said. “Both outpatient and inpatient work as suggested by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) does not find us in agreement.”
The medical society said that they back the decisions of the extraordinary general assembly of the medical association (CyMA) of last October and the actions of this board for the improvement of Gesy.
“We advise our members not join the current health scheme proposed by the state,” the group said. The government, however, despite the fact that CyMA, the majority of medical societies, and private hospitals said they would not back Gesy, is confident it will find the 350 doctors needed for the smooth running of the heath scheme. So far, more than 120 doctors registered to participate in Gesy as GPs while another 150 state doctors will be integrated as GPs.
The situation appeared bleaker with regards to the number of paediatricians eager to participate.
According to the HIO the average earnings for each paediatrician and GP for adults will amount to €135,000, while specialist doctors will earn €160,000 annually.
These amounts are particularly favourable compared to those of other healthcare systems, HIO had said.
