The parents of the 20-month-old baby boy who died in Makarios Hospital earlier this week, apparently from complications from influenza, are filing medical negligence charges.

According to reports, the complaint filed with Limassol CID does not name specific doctors.

The baby had been rushed to the Limassol general hospital on Sunday on orders of a private paediatrician, but his transfer to the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia was soon deemed necessary.

The boy died early on Monday morning, around three hours after he was taken to Nicosia.

At the parents’ request, a post-mortem was carried out by state pathologist Angeliki Papetta and private pathologist Marios Matsakis.

Matsakis told state broadcaster Cybc that the cause of the boy’s death was pneumonia and sepsis, brought about by Type A flu.

The boy was suffering from acute diarrhoea and vomiting when admitted to Limassol general hospital.

On Thursday pathologist Papetta told the Cyprus News Agency that the precise cause of death will be determined through specialised tissue and microbiological tests conducted at the Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

Influenza is a contagious viral infection that attacks the respiratory system. Type A influenza is the most serious and known to cause widespread outbreaks and diseases. There is also type B and C.
