The religious holiday of Epiphany will be celebrated in Famagusta in the north this Sunday, January 6, for just the fourth time since 1974.
The celebrations to mark the day are being organised by the Bishopric of Famagusta and Constantia, the ‘Ammochostos, our city’ initiative and the Famagusta municipality.
Buses will transport the faithful to Famagusta to attend the liturgy held at the church of Ayios Georgios Exorinos, between 7.30 am and 10.30am.
An hour later, the blessing of the waters will take place at Glossa beach. The ceremony, that includes diving to retrieve the Holy Cross which the priest throws in the water according to the Greek Orthodox tradition, “will bring back to life the moments we have missed so much,” the organisers said in an announcement.
Free buses will depart on Sunday for Famagusta:
Paralimni departure from Ayios Georgios Square at 7am
Larnaca from the fire service station at 7am
Nicosia from the handicraft centre on Athalassa Avenue at 7am
Limassol and Paphos from Ayios Georgios Havouzas at 6.30am
Those interested must book a seat by 6pm on Saturday.
For more information and to book a bus seat call Chryso Hadjidemetriou at 99 587110.
