Gesy will be implemented despite objections, says president

The National Health Scheme (Gesy) will be implemented regardless of any objections from wherever they arise, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday.

“Gesy is a decision taken by the government and supported unanimously by parliament and the political system, and will be implemented regardless of reactions,” Anastasiades said during Wednesday’s inauguration ceremony of a new kindergarten of Pasydy, the civil servants’ union.

“If weaknesses arise once [Gesy] is put into operation, we will then see how such a revolutionary reform can be implemented, since it will be implemented regardless of any reactions from wherever they arise.”

Meanwhile, although the list of doctors who have expressed interest in joining Gesy to the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) is growing longer, including an increasing number of paediatricians and personal doctors for adults, dissenting voices are also intensifying.

On Tuesday, the Greek medical association said it was against doctors from Greece to Cyprus applying to work for Gesy, pledging solidarity to their Cypriot colleagues.

The association took a stance following reports that the Cypriot government would try to bring in doctors from Greece through a law amendment in case an insufficient number of Cypriot doctors applied to join Gesy.

Tuesday also saw announcements by the medical societies of pathologists, haematologists and cardiologists formally announcing their refusal to back Gesy.
