SEVENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Dimosthenis Thoupos was killed in a car crash on Wednesday morning in Kiti,Larnaca.

The road death marks the second for 2019.

At around 9.10am, a 71-year-old driver from Kiti was driving his car on Tersefanou avenue, with Thoupos in the passenger seat when the driver attempted to make a right turn and an oncoming car crashed into him.

The car coming from the opposite direction was driven by a 24-year-old with a 16-year-old passenger.

The 74-year-old was critically injured from the collision. He was transferred to the Larnaca general hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

The 71-year-old driver was retained at the hospital for further checks, but his life is not in danger, said head of Larnaca’s traffic police, Charis Hadjigiasemi, adding that the passengers of the second car were administered first aid and released.

From preliminary police checks, “it appears that Dimosthenis Thoupos was not wearing a seat belt,” Hadjigiasemi added.

“Alcotests and narkotests were conducted on the drivers of both cars, showing negative results.”
