Cyprus one of the safest places to drive says holiday website

Holiday website Canvas holidays claim Cyprus is the second safest place in Europe to drive in.

According to the website, they used the European Commission’s Annual Accident Report 2018 to calculate the data.

“Denmark takes the top spot as the safest place to drive, reporting just five accidents per 10,000 residents annually. Cyprus comes in close second, with 7.5 accidents per 10,000 residents, followed by Finland with 8.5. France and Poland make up the rest of the top five, with 8.6 and 8.9 accidents per 10,000 residents respectively,” the website says.

Austria is at the other end of the scale, with 43.6, followed by Germany (37.2) and Belgium (35.2)

The European Commission annual report uses data from 2016, only counting accidents where people are injured or killed, not those which result only in damage.

In 2016, they recorded 46 fatal accident for Cyprus, 35 of which occurred in urban areas and the rest outside urban areas.

In the EU, most pedestrians and driver fatalities occurred on Fridays and Saturdays, 16 per cent each. This differs from passengers, most of whom, 20 per cent, died on Sundays.

In Cyprus, the six passengers who died in road accidents were all killed on different days of the week.

Of the 27 drivers who were killed, most (seven) died on Saturdays.

In Cyprus and the EU in general most accidents happen around 5pm.

The death toll from road accidents reduced in Cyprus during 2016 by 19.3 per cent, according to the 11th Road Safety Performance Index Report of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). This was the second biggest reduction in the EU.

The ETSC also reported 46 road deaths for the year, 11 fewer than 2015. The reduction followed an increase of 26.7 per cent in 2015. With the reduction, Cyprus went back from the 20th to the 13th place it ranked in 2014 among the EU countries with regard to the road traffic death rate.
