A 66-year-old woman who plunged 30 metres off a cliff in the Kykkos area on Sunday while taking photos, died a few hours later at the Nicosia general hospital, police said on Monday.

The woman, according to police, was having her photos taken by others, when, under conditions that are still being investigated, she lost her balance and fell off the cliff. The incident occurred at around 12.30pm.

She was rescued by air due to the inaccessibility of the area and bad weather conditions.

The rescue crew, that was on the police helicopter Akritas, used a special rescue carriage to lift the woman and transfer her to the general hospital in Nicosia where she died a few hours later.

This is the first photograph-related death reported in Cyprus, a growing phenomenon particularly in terms of selfies.

According to a 2018 study, there were 259 selfie deaths in 137 incidents reported globally between October 2011 to November 2017. The highest occurrences were reported in India followed by Russia, the United States, and Pakistan.
