The national health scheme (Gesy) will go ahead as planned with the first phase introduced On July 1, 2019, President Nicos Anastasiades said.
In an interview with Phileleftheros published on Monday, Anastasiades said no complaint will cause the cancellation or the postponement of its introduction, which is bet his government will win.
Five groups of specialist doctors have already said they will opt out of Gesy. ENT doctors, endocrinologists, paediatricians and gastroenterologists were last week joined by members of the Cyprus Society of Nuclear Medicine in saying they would not join Gesy.
He is hopeful that within 2019 the government can also go ahead with the implementation of other large changes in regulations, including those that cover local government.
We do not have the right, he said, put off reforms that are essential now for the proper working of the state, especially those departments concerned with the daily activities of residents, such as local government. We must overcome local interests and see the bigger picture, he said.
He said the government is also at the final stages of drawing up legislation that will make it a criminal offence to not properly file a tax return.
On the issue of electronic government, the president said Cyprus is in close contact with Estonia – a European leader in this field ¬ and is in the process of putting €240 million of programmes into effect, which will change the basic way the state is run.
He also expressed faith in the government’s plan to make Cyprus into a regional education centre. He said tertiary education is already taking on a more international role.
