Contracts for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Kato Polemidia aimed at expanding the capacity of the Limassol-Amathus sewerage system and meet the needs of the rapidly-expanding city, have been signed.
The contracts, signed between the Limassol-Amathus sewerage board (Sala) and consortium Kruger A/S and Cybarco Limited JV, provide for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Polemidia. They also provide that the contractor will undertake its maintenance for a period of ten years, with the right to extend the agreement for another five years.
Construction of the €42.9m (plus VAT) project is expected to start at the beginning of 2019 and be completed in 24 months.
According to the director general of Sala, Iacovos Papaiacovou, the project is of vital importance to the city, as, “it will actually pave the way for wider public service from the sewerage system, given the rapid development of Limassol.”
The new unit will serve about 8,000 to 10,000 households and a total of 25,000 people, he said, including major west Limassol projects, such as the City of Dreams Mediterranean casino resort which is currently under construction.
“The project will help to prevent the very serious problems we would face in about two years if the station was not built as the system has reached its limits,” Papaiacovou told the Cyprus News Agency.
Sala is also launch tender competitions at the beginning of 2019 for anti-flood projects in the greater Limassol area for a total cost of about €16m, and for the sewerage project of the Pyrgos and Parekklissia communities with a total construction cost of approximately €14m. It is also announcing a tender competition for the sewerage projects for government estates for a total cost of approximately €15m.
