Fire Reveals Over 200 Antiquities in the Mountains of Profitis Elias, Phthiotida

A fire on Thursday in the mountains of Profitis Elias, in Phthiotida, central Greece, revealed antiquities dating back to the first half of the 5th century BC and the geometric period.

The Ministry of Culture announced on Friday that the firemen who put out the blaze found more than 200 relics among the burnt bushes. The region is a known hot spot for illegal excavations.

The objects were discovered in an area spanning 150 meters and in plastic bags.

Items such as clay vessels, several bronze bracelets, two pins, a fragmented copper mirror and numerous figurines of male, female and animal forms were discovered mostly intact.

The Ministry does not yet know where the objects originally came from.
