The European Court of Human Rights has ordered the Cyprus government to pay €25,000 as compensation and €3,000 for expenses to a Canadian man who was abused by police in 2011.
Hani Abdul Khani Kabbara took Cyprus to court in connection with an incident that happened on February 27, 2011 in Limassol.
According to the court, Kabbara was arrested by police officers in front of a bank as he was suspected of having withdrawn money using a fake credit card. He was taken to the Limassol central police station for questioning.
Later on the same day he was examined by doctors at Limassol general hospital who found he had sustained several injuries.
The Canadian appealed to Strasbourg on the grounds of having been inhumanly and degradingly treated, as he was allegedly abused by police officers at the station.
The court also ruled that the incident was not investigated effectively by the authorities at the time.
