A heroic Greek firefighter who underwent 18 surgeries after being badly burned while trying to save two colleagues has spoken bravely about his struggle.
Angelos Barmpagiannis was talking during an interview with TV presenter Tatiana Stefanidou broadcast on Greek television this week.
He revealed how, as a firefighter on the Aegean island of Chios in 1991, he plunged into a fire in an attempt to rescue two colleagues who had lost consciousness.
Tragically, Barmpagiannis suffered 60 percent burns to his body and was unable to save his two friends.
In his harrowing interview, he explained how he had to undergo extensive surgery to repair the physical damage suffered in the flames.
Since then he has also battled psychological problems caused by the trauma but has regained control over his life, despite the tragedy he experienced.
