DiEM25: A Self-Defeating Choice for the European Left

DiEM25, the pan-European movement founded by Yanis Varoufakis in 2016, has always had the support of certain leading leftist intellectuals. Over the last year, though, it has also been developing momentum elsewhere, particularly among the ranks of European youth. Both its founding manifesto and subsequent conferences have contributed important appraisals of the situation in Europe, especially on issues related to the inefficiency of democratic processes within European Union institutions; the European elite’s alienation from the people and the economic problems that this generates; and the lack of transparency created by the triangle that is constituted by the media, big business, and the European Union bureaucracy.
