Cyprus did not violate any human rights conventions by deporting three Sri Lankan nationals in 2011, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on Tuesday.
They had been arrested and remanded in January 2011 after they took part in clashes with a group of other Sri Lankans in a district of Nicosia.
Two of them, Don Uditha Niroshana Kahadawa Arachchige, aged 37 at the time, and Dushan Aruna Shanthi Budda Koralage, 31 were held in detention for five days before being deported while Dehiwalage Shehan Fernando, 33, was held for seven days.
The three were deported to Sri Lanka but denied their involvement in the clashes.
Taking the case to the ECHR, they complained the move by Cypriot authorities violated Article 5 (1), their right to liberty and security, and Article 5 (4), right to have lawfulness of detention decided speedily by a court, over their detention before deportation.
Court in its ruling announced there had been no violation of the specific articles.
