A 54-year-old man Serbian hitman wanted for his suspected involvement in a murder from 2016 was extradited to Cyprus and remanded for five days on Friday.

An international arrest warrant had been issued against him and another Serbian national after appear to have been hired to kill an underworld figure, Alexis Mavromichalis, aka ‘Alexoui’.

The 54-year-old was arrested in Russia in July 2017 and was extradited earlier this week as a result of cooperation between Interpol in Nicosia and Moscow.

He was remanded for five days and faces charges related to conspiring to commit a murder, participating in a criminal organization and illegal possession of a firearm.

The Serbian authorities had been investigating a crime ring in 2016 when they found out that a number of its members were in Cyprus plotting a murder.

Police said initial investigations showed that the possible target was Alexis Mavromichalis from Nicosia. It also emerged that the contact was Marios Christodoulou, aka Benny, currently doing life in jail for the killing of Phanos Kalopsidiotis and conspiracy to murder Mavromichalis.

The two arrived to Cyprus through the north in April 2016 but left the island some three hours later after they had been tipped off that they were being monitored.
