The Turkish Cypriot administration is still considering bringing electricity from Turkey via undersea cables, it was reported on Thursday.
According to Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis, ‘minister’ of economy and energy, Ozdil Nami, said that his ‘ministry’ is continuing to assess electricity for the coming years and monitor production capacity in the north.
He said that they are carrying out studies together with experts on other alternatives but these also include bringing electricity via cables from Turkey, adding that they are making the necessary contacts on this subject.
Nami said, however, that the main aim is to provide cheap, affordable and clean electricity.
Current power production is enough to meet consumption, he said, but in the coming months they will make openings to encourage solar energy use.
Nami said he supported this move as long as it did not bring an additional cost to consumers.
Referring to the privatisation of ‘KIB-TEK’ energy supplier, Nami said that it was not on the agenda.
