A 47-year-old man in Larnaca was sentenced to 12 years in prison for systematically raping and beating his step-daughter and causing grievous body harm to her sister.
The man, who has not been named to protect the identities of the victims, was found guilty on four counts of rape, violating a woman under the age of 13, indecent assault, and two cases of causing grievous body harm between January and July of 2000.
He was found guilty of all charges in a hearing conducted behind closed doors.
Larnaca criminal court heard chilling details of how the man repeatedly raped one of his step-daughters, who was 12 at the time, in various places around the house like the roof or where the dogs were kept so that he would not be seen and could take photographs of her.
The young girl lived with her mother, sister, brother and stepfather.
The court also heard he used to beat the two sisters from when they were around four or five years old until they were 11 using anything from his hands, his belt, an iron pipe or a meat tenderizer on their faces, necks and anywhere on their bodies.
He would apparently count how many times he beat them so he would hit them both the same number of times.
“Instead of finding protection, an innocent girl of a tender age at the time the crimes were committed encountered the most inhumane and humiliating treatment which only people with animal instincts have. Instead of being the guardian he ought to have been, he became her nightmare and through his actions, stigmatized her personality and social standing,” the judge said.
When the rape victim turned 14 she spoke to her sister about what was going on and on the same day both of them talked to their mother. The court heard that she dismissed the accusations and the girls left the house on the same day, going to live with their grandmother and aunt.
When they turned 18, they left Larnaca entirely and moved to another city.
Two years ago, they filed a report to the police.
The psychological and traumatic effects of the man’s actions the victim had to endure for 16 years were very serious, the court said, and he took advantage of her young age and his place in the house as stepfather in the worst possible way.
His clean criminal record was presented as a mitigating factor.
Charges of rape and violating a young woman under the age of 13 can be sentenced for life. The man will serve 12-years, counting since his imprisonment after his arrest.
