The Larnaca water board made a plea to the public on Tuesday to save water or it would be forced to impose fines on anyone caught using their hose to wash things like pavements, streets or cars.
In a written announcement, the board said “the conditions of prolonged drought that we are experiencing in Cyprus the past year have had an adverse impact on the quantity of water.
“The available quantities of water are not satisfactory enough to fully cover our water needs and that is why the government has already announced restrictions on water available for irrigation purposes.”
The government has said there will be no water cuts – at least for the time being, but the board specified that everyone has a duty to save water and avoid wasting it.
A law on special measures to save water forbids the use of a water hose to clean pavements, roads, balconies and cars. Although rarely implemented, the board said it would proceed to take action against those found violating the legislation.
Someone found guilty can face up to three moths in prison or a maximum fine of €513 or even both. An out of court settlement is a €51 fine to the water board.
“Water in Cyprus is scarce and every drop of water we waste today, we will be deprived of tomorrow,” the board said.
