The labour ministry announced on Monday it has now received 570 applications for its ‘baby dowry’ scheme aimed at helping low income families obtain the necessities for their newborns.
The scheme was announced on December 8, 2017 and covers the period from Jaunuary1, 2017 to December 31, 2023.
The scheme includes basic consumer goods such as equipment, bedding, diapers and hygiene and baby-care items of total value €1,649.
Announcing cabinet approval of the scheme in April 2017, Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou said that the dowry would include among other things, a pram, a cot, a baby chair and nappies for 24 months, while families would also be given a monthly allowance for the purchase of baby food.
The project aims to “reduce material deprivation and tackle the risk of social exclusion for families in scope, through the provision of designated basic consumer goods for free, as well as through pursuing supplementary measures relating to guidance and networking with relevant state services”.
Of the 570 applications submitted so far 347 are by those eligible for the Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI) scheme and the others from persons facing other socio-economic problems. Beneficiaries are families with one or more children born after January 1, 2017.
Their problems are evaluated on the basis of reports by the state’s social services.
The ‘baby dowry’ project which has a budget of €3.6 million is co-funded by the government and the EU under the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) from 2014 to 2020.
Interested parties may receive applications from district social services offices or the labour ministry’s webpage at www.mlsi.gov.cy.
Applications can be submitted at district social welfare services.
