The huge fire which burnt 30 hectares of dense forest in the northwest of the island is under full control, spokesman for the forestry department Christos Christou said on Friday morning.
The fire broke out at 6.30pm on Thursday in a forest near Ayia Paraskevi and Pano Pyrgos in the Tyllyria area and quickly spread due to strong winds.
Around 250 persons helped to extinguish it, while 40 vehicles from the forest department, 10 fire trucks and four aircraft were deployed. The fire was under control shortly after midnight.
First indications are that arson was the cause and a 35-year-old man was arrested. He is a local resident and was detained at 4.30am.
One man working for the forest department suffered minor burns and was treated in hospital but went back to fight the fire later on.
Fire fighters from Greece and Israel were ready to assist but were not needed in the end.
The fire was contained before it could spread to the north where fire services were also on the alert.
