A Greek minister described the continued detention of the two Greek soldiers in Turkey as “barbaric”, a day after a Turkish court ruled again against their petition to be released until their trial.
Speaking on Greek radio, Alternate Minister of National Defence Fotis Kouvelis said that Turkey’s judicial system had failed to say why they were still being held and on what charges.
“A detention without indictment is illegal, it violates international law, every concept of law,” Kouvelis said.
He added that such behavior is “barbaric”.
The Greek officers have been detained pending trial since early March for inadvertently entering Turkish territory during a patrol, but formal charges have not been filed.
Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis also blasted Turkey, saying the detention of the soldiers is not in line with the behavior of a “civilized state”.
“It is a situation that has nothing to do with a civilized state, a state that wants to uphold the rule of law, and I think that this situation is now unacceptable.” he said.
He added that the Greek government was trying at all levels for the release of the two soldiers.
