A waste management company embroiled in a corruption scandal that has seen state officials jailed has been excluded from competing for government contracts for five years starting from March 2016, it emerged on Friday.
Helector Cyprus Ltd, whose senior officials have admitted to paying kickbacks to state officials was excluded following a complaint submitted by the Paphos municipality.
According to the municipality, this could now complicate things for the government, which was ready to sign a new deal with the company.
The company had failed to challenge the complaint.
Helector has been embroiled in a massive scandal relating to waste management at two sites it administered in Paphos and Larnaca.
There have been two trials so far and a third one is ongoing.
The company allegedly overcharged municipalities by reporting higher waste volumes while public officials looked the other way in return for backhanders.
The defendants in the current trial are former Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiatis; Demetrios Patsalides (municipal employee); Michalis Pantis, Stelios Papadopoulos (civil servant), Antonis Kourouzides, Georgios Koullapis (pensioners); former head of the Paphos Sewerage Board Eftychios Malekkides; Nicholas Koullapis (doctor); Enviroplan S.A.; Theophanis Lolos (chemical engineer); N.E Midoriaco Ltd; and Helector Cyprus Ltd.
Former Paphos mayor Savvas Vergas is doing jail time for this case.
