Cyprus is celebrating ‘Stinky Thursday’ today with songs, games in schools, loads of meat on the grill and alcohol.
Tsiknopempti or Stinky Thursday marks the beginning of the annual carnival festivities and signals the start of the gradual weaning off meat and dairy in preparation for the 50-day lent period that leads to Easter Sunday which this year falls on April 28.
Despite the unstable weather and the cold, across the island there were barbecues outside shops and offices to mark the day, which traditionally ‘stinks the air’ with the smoke of charcoaled meat.
