A pilot drug addiction treatment centre for minors was approved by the council of ministers on Thursday.
As a first step, the national addictions authority will be invited to submit proposals for the centre, said deputy government spokesperson, Klelia Vasiliou.
The project aims to support underage substance abusers who lack a family support network, as well as underage abusers whose level of addiction warrants an intensive treatment programme, and convicted underage users.
According to Vasiliou, the treatment centre will work on a 24-hour basis, and will consist of 12-15 rooms.
A team composed of professionals with various specialisations will provide intensive treatment, while accommodation, food, supervision and all-round management of the child’s problem areas will also be provided.
The annual budget for the operation of the treatment centre was set at €600,000, while an additional €70,000 will be provided during its first year of operation for the purchase of equipment.
The project is expected to be completed within 2019, Vasiliou said.
