The department of electromechanical services alerted consumers on Friday to be careful when purchasing decorative fairy lights for the Christmas season, advising that they opt for lights made by certified manufacturers which meet the basic safety standards.
The department announced that it has already begun a campaign to check the safety standards of the Christmas lights on sale.
But it warned that consumers must also be alert when buying lights. They should check that the CE stamp is clearly marked on the label attached to the cable, as well as the basic technical features of the lighting including the nominal volt tension (V), the nominal frequency (Hz) or wattage (W) or ampere (A).
They must also bear a registered trade name or trade mark, as well as the manufacturer’s or importer’s mailing address, and the type or model of the lighting.
All markings must be visible, legible, durable and not easily removed, the department said.
It also advised that the lighting devices are switched off when leaving the house and overnight.
The department also recommended the use of LED lights, which use less power and produce less heat, therefore reducing the risk of fire while operating more efficiently, contributing in this way to the protection of the environment.
