The UN Security Council on Tuesday welcomed the UN Secretary General’s latest report as well as his decision to continue efforts towards reigniting negotiations between the two communities through his envoy Jane Holl Lute.
Lute is to meet President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in separate meetings on Wednesday, in the framework of a fact-finding mission where she will explore the willingness of the two sides to propose new ideas as part of an overall solution.
Members of the Council were briefed on Tuesday by UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Antonio Guterres’ latest report on his good office’s mission for Cyprus, issued on October 15.
“The Members of the Security Council urged all involved parties to engage constructively with openness and creativity in finding a way ahead on the settlement of the Cyprus issue in line with the recommendations of the Secretary General’s report and prepare well for the way ahead without unreasonable delays,” Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the United Nations and President of the Security Council Sacha Sergio Llorenti Soliz told the press after the meeting.
Soliz added that members looked forward to further updates on the progress of Lute’s discussions with the two leaders.
The Council “reiterated the importance of a comprehensive and durable settlement based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation in line with Security Council resolutions, and their conviction that many benefits would come from it,” Soliz said.
The Council recognised signs of commitment towards a solution from the island’s two leaders: “[Members of the Council] were encouraged by the meeting of the two leaders in Nicosia on 26 October 2018; in particular their agreement to open two crossing points on 12 November. They urged the two leaders to build on this positive step with further confidence-building measures as soon as possible,” Soliz said.
Council members also stressed their support for a Cypriot-led process and noted the importance of civil society engagement, particularly women and youth.
