Frederick University recently held an event on the occasion of European Day against Trafficking in Human Beings. The event was attended by the Minister of Labour Zeta Emilianidou, the human rights, commissioner Maria Stylianou-Lottidi, the honorary head of Cyprus Stop Trafficking, Androulla Christofidou-Henriques and deputy vice chancellor of the De Montfort University professor Andy Collop.

In the context of the event, students, professors and the participants attended a documentary titled “The price of sex”, about women from Eastern Europe who have been trafficked and sexually exploited. In addition to Frederick University students and academics, the event was attended by students and professors of the De Montfort University in Leicester, who visited Frederick University as part of the campaign ‘UN Together’ (#JoinTogether). This United Nations campaign aims to promote respect and dignity for refugees and immigrants and to combat xenophobia and discrimination.

Natassa Fredericou, vice-president of Frederick University, said that the phenomenon of trafficking is often linked to refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers.

“Because in all these cases there are some common parameters such as poverty, despair and the need for hope for a better future, these people are quite vulnerable and can easily fall victim to exploitation,” she said. “We, as a university, are committed to raising awareness on these serious issues and we set as a priority, every year, at least one action to raise our university community’s awareness of trafficking in human beings.”

The Minister of Labour Zeta Emilianidou thanked Frederick University and Cyprus Stop Trafficking for their actions aimed at informing and raising public awareness of the issue of trafficking in human beings. She also stressed that great efforts were being made by the state to improve the current situation in Cyprus.

As part of the effort to raise awareness among students, staff and the wider society about the issue of trafficking, Frederick University has often worked with Cyprus Stop Trafficking and its head, Androulla Christofidou-Henriques. Through this collaboration, along with raising the awareness of various groups of the population, the university has given victims of trafficking a chance to have a better future by giving them full scholarships and the opportunity to study at the university.
