Cyprus not matured as organic market

Share this:

Cyprus has not yet matured as a market for organic produce, though important efforts have been made towards this end in recent years, environmental commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a seminar dealing with the return to nutritional self-sufficiency, Panayiotou said that alternative bio-cultivation is a dynamic and innovative sector that could exploit a lot of unused land in Cyprus, producing invaluable and high-yield products, while respecting the environment and society as the land remains habitable and productive.

She added that a shift to the production of traditional varieties should come hand in hand with radical changes in the current food production system, by which mass production and exports of fruit and vegetables would be gradually replaced by smaller-scale local polycultures.
