Three UK Cypriots have been honoured in the Queens birthday honours list, according to London-based Parikiaki newspaper.
The first is UK Cypriot Bernadette Michaelides who was awarded an MBE for services to community nursing in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Her father is from Famagusta, the paper said.
The second was Kerry Kyriacos Michael the former artistic director of Theatre Royal Stratford East who received an honour for his services to the arts and the third UK Cypriot to make the list was Fylaktis Philippou, 94, who received an OBE for services to hairdressing and to the community in St James, London. Fylaktis apprenticed as a barber when he was a boy, and owned Briggs Barbers in St James London.
In 2016 when Philippou, known as Phil was 92, he won the Long Service Award at the Mayfair Times Community Award, he was lauded by British actor Stephen Fry who tweeted at the time: “My hero Fylaktis Philippou, barber in his beloved St James’s since he was a boy. A friendly, humble and kind man”.
