Cyprus, Greece and Israel “share values” and are keen on promoting “security and stability” in the region, Greece’s Defence Minister Panos Kammenos said on Thursday.
“Cyprus and Greece are jointly building the future of the region. Hellenism has never been aggressive,” Kammenos added after meeting his Cypriot counterpart Savvas Angelides.
Kammenos arrived on the island ahead of Friday’s trilateral meeting of the three countries’ defence ministers.
Cyprus will be hosting the second trilateral meeting of the three ministers at the Zenon Search and Rescue Coordination Centre in Larnaca.
It will focus on the further enhancement of military cooperation and the promotion of maritime and energy security.
According to a press release, simultaneous to the tripartite ministerial meeting, a two-day workshop is taking place in Nicosia with the participation of SMEs from the three countries doing business in the defence sector.
Cyprus has no defence industry of its own to speak of.
The trilateral contacts will also discuss cooperation in the fields of cyber defence and search & rescue.
During their visit to the island, Kammenos and Israel’s defence minister Avigdor Lieberman will also be meeting separately with president Nicos Anastasiades.
