Officials said on Tuesday that by the year 2020 Cyprus may be able to achieve the target of 13 per cent of its energy being generated from renewables in the fields of electricity generation, heating and cooling, and transport – but the target of 10 per cent in renewables in road transport poses a daunting challenge.
During a discussion in parliament, officials warned that the island risks facing fines from Brussels should it fail to comply with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive. The fines would necessarily have to be paid by consumers.
“It appears that we are implementing the overall objective of 13 per cent RES penetration in terms of gross final energy consumption when it comes to electricity production and heating/cooling,” said Diko MP Angelos Votsis.
“And we are able to speed up plans for photovoltaic, solar and wind parks. But we do have a serious problem when it comes to RES penetration in road transport.”
Based on data furnished by the energy ministry, currently the penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in transport stands at 2.4 per cent – a far cry from the 10 per cent target.
The EU directive should have been incorporated into Cypriot law as of last year, which is why the island is facing possible infringement proceedings from the European Commission.
The Renewable Energy Directive establishes an overall policy for the production and promotion of energy from renewable sources in the EU. It requires the EU to fulfil at least 20 per cent of its total energy needs with renewables by 2020 – to be achieved through the attainment of individual national targets. All EU countries must also ensure that at least 10 per cent of their transport fuels come from renewable sources by 2020.
The EU says biofuels and bioliquids are instrumental in helping countries meet their 10 per cent renewables target in transport.
