Concrete will be poured into the base of the western parapet of the Eleftheria square wall on Wednesday, closing the pedestrian crossing of the square from 9am on Wednesday until 7am on Thursday.
Pedestrians should use the temporary metal bridge which was the only crossing before the opening of the square, the Nicosia municipality announced.
Constantinos Palaiologou avenue will be closed to traffic between the Lyssarides building and Eleftheria square from 4pm on Wednesday until 7am on Thursday.
Work in the eastern part of the square is in the final stages while work in the western part is “progressing at a satisfactory pace”, the municipality said.
After the concrete is poured on Wednesday, the entire protective metal and glass parapet will be placed by the company who constructed it in Lisbon.
A check was made last week and the specialised company is expected to come to Cyprus in September to put the parts in place once their construction is completed.
At the moment, the moulds for the central stairs below the bridge have been installed and concrete will be poured into them next month.
At the southern end, the opening of the square towards Evagorou avenue, all the works included in the project contract have been completed. Some things remain to be done on the pavements of Stasinou avenue and the ramps of the D’Avila moat. These are executed in stages so as not to interfere with access to the public, the municipality explained.
At the northern end, towards Ledra and Onasagorou streets, vehicles will have regular access to Rigenis street within one month.
Works at Kostaki Pantelidis avenue have been completed and vehicles will be able to travel normally from the avenue to Solomou square.
