100 new graduates from police academy

President Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday wished all the best to the 100 police cadets of the class of 2017, during a graduation ceremony in Nicosia.

In his keynote address, Anastasiades congratulated the 100 new members of the police, but said their sense of pride should be coupled with a sense of responsibility to uphold the law and serve the public.

Law enforcement in the current age is becoming an ever more demanding and complex profession, the president said.

He said the state was undertaking efforts to boost the police force in order to combat organised crime.

According to Anastasiades, under his administration’s watch hiring practices have been modernised and recruitment is now based on merit and ability – a break with the past, when nepotism and the semblance of nepotism were the order of the day.

The president also noted the expansion of the neighbourhood policemen, whose numbers have increased by orders of magnitude since the institution was introduced in 2013.

Currently, he said, there are neighbourhood police officers serving in 315 municipalities and communities island-wide.

“I would like to praise the police force, the police chief and the police leadership for the difficult task and challenges they face daily,” he noted.
