Greek President: FYROM Constitution Revision Prerequisite for Name Resolution

The prerequisite for an agreement on the name of FYROM and its Accession to Nato and the EU is the country’s Constitution Revision, said President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

The Greek president spoke during a ceremony where he was declared honorary citizen of the Pydna-Kolindros municipality on Sunday.

Pavlopoulos also sent a message to Turkey saying that relations of friendship, good neighborliness and European perspective are going through the respect of International Law and the EU acquis communautaire.

In regards to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Pavlopoulos noted that it is clear to everyone that FYROM’s accession to the EU and NATO can not be accepted without the previous revision of its Constitution and without a name “that will eliminate any trace of irredentism”. At the same time he highlighted the responsibilities of FYROM Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.

“The solution of the name issue is a basic prerequisite – and this is not just a Greek position, it is the NATO position, it is the EU position – it has to change its Constitution,” Pavlopoulos underlined.
