Former Nicosia and creator of a cultural and arts centre in Kaimakli, Mayor Michalakis Zampelas has died aged 82.
Zampelas was educated in the UK and studied to be a chartered accountant, establishing Coopers & Lybrand on the island in 1970. The firm later became PricewaterhouseCoopers following a merger between the two global accounting giants in 1998. In 2002, Zampelas took over as mayor of Nicosia, an office he held until December 2006.
While in office, he was instrumental in kicking off the Eleftheria Square project, which has continued on under two of his successors.
Zampelas also served as the Honorary Consul General of Estonia in Cyprus.
Together with his wife, the former mayor opened the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum in Kaimakli in May 2012.
Zampelas’ funeral will be held at the Ayia Varvara church in Kaimakli on Friday at 4pm.
