One dog captured from roaming Limassol pack

A coordinated operation to catch a pack of dogs went ahead as planned on Sunday morning in Limassol, resulting in the capture of one of the dogs which had been attacking and killing cats.

The Animal Party on Monday said this event, where volunteers were welcome was a start.
On Sunday, another five were spotted, and it is up to the authorities to continue the efforts to catch them.

“Thirty to forty came, the majority of them Russians,” head of the Animal Party Kyriacos Kyriacou said. “One of them had seen her two cats killed.”

He explained the captured dog, a female, will be kept at Ayios Trychonas dog pound, where it will be checked and kept until Tuesday, when it will be decided what next to do with it. As Kyriacou said, killing the dog was not an option.

The dogs are roaming a large area, competing with the cats for food which is left near the beach for the cats, and it is therefore not easy to locate them, especially at night, he added.

“It is about time the state assumes its responsibilities because the problem as regards abandoned dogs cannot go on indefinitely.”

“We have shown the communities the way how to do it, and supported them on social media,” Kyriacou explained, adding that the party brought all the stakeholders together for a meeting on Friday, the community leaders of Pyrgos, Parekklisia, Ayios Tychonas and Moni, police and the head of the Limassol district’s vet services.

This was long overdue, as the problem has persisted for more than a month, and various people have failed to catch any of the large neglected and abandoned dogs causing the problems.

As a result of the meeting, the communities arranged to bring an expert with a drone, and bought a tranquiliser gun. Nets and other equipment were also purchased and taken to Sunday’s operation.

Kyriacou told the Cyprus Mail the dogs had attacked cats so far but there are concerns they may attack humans.
“We are concerned that the local authorities don’t have the equipment needed such as a tranquiliser gun to deal with this worrying situation.”
