Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou on Saturday said the introduction of the National Health Scheme (Gesy) will upgrade and modernise the healthcare sector.
Addressing the annual general meeting of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the minister said the time has come for the current situation, where patients with chronic diseases are forced to spend large amounts of money for their health, to change.
The philosophy of Gesy is based on universality and social solidarity on medical services so that everyone, regardless of age, financial situation and severity of medical condition will have equal access to high-quality healthcare services without any restrictions.
He reiterated that there will be problems at first, but that “with decisiveness and goodwill” they will be dealt with, improving at the same time the scheme to everyone’s benefit.
Meanwhile, leader of the Citizens’ Alliance Giorgos Lillikas said on Saturday that some political leaders are trying to undermine Gesy either through last-minute law amendments or through consultations with insurance companies and the medical association (CyMA). These politicians, he said, urge doctors not to join Gesy so that they can later in the year, use as a pretext the lack of doctors to justify their request for the postponement of the reform, citing problems.
The government, he said, ought to not pay heed to those calling for a postponement of Gesy.
Lillikas also said there has been talk of some political leaders promising insurance companies and the leadership of CyMA amendments to the law on Gesy after the Euro-elections to allow a multi-payer system. The law on Gesy provides for a single-payer system.
He refrained from naming these politicians. “The people know who they are,” he said.
He called on members of the public to urge their doctors to join Gesy and said that CyMA is bullying doctors that have decided to join Gesy.
