A 34-year-old man was remanded for three days on Sunday in connection with the extortion of money from another man since May.
The second man, a 56-year-old resident of Limassol, told police on Friday that he was attacked with a knife by a burglar who had walked into his home looking for money.
He said the burglar entered the house while he was in through a balcony door that was open and demanded money.
The would-be burglar reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the abdomen, injuring him slightly. He then ran outside without taking anything.
The owner of the house was treated in Limassol hospital.
When the 56-year-old was subjected to forensic tests it became evident that he had injured himself. He then confessed he had caused the injuries to himself because of what the 34-year-old had done to him over the past months.
According to allegations, which are being examined, the older man last May approached the 34-year-old with whom he was on friendly terms and said he needed to borrow €1,000. A few days later, his friend gave him the money, saying he had borrowed it from another person whom he would not name.
This person was allegedly asking for a monthly 20 per cent interest on the sum.
The 34-year-old said he was also receiving threats from the loan shark who demanded to be paid back.
The 56-year-old said he had paid a total of €2,980 in total, but the younger man kept insisting the money was not enough.
The 34-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon and remanded on Sunday.
