New bills seek to toughen forest arson penalties

Share this:

Four bills set to go the plenum seek to impose exceedingly tough fines on those found guilty of forest arson attacks.

The bills, submitted by ruling Disy were discussed during Monday’s House interior committee.

During the session, Disy MP Nicos Nouris said forests should be protected and while everything should be done to give the government the necessary goals to do that, a message needed to be sent out to the public that there would be no leniency over penalising those trying to destroy forests.

The bills were set to head to plenum on Friday.

Nouris expressed his belief that the bills would be voted into law by lawmakers thus clearly sending out the message that those destroying forests will be punished.

MPs also discussed the legislation on local authority reform, which is set to go to plenum in September after the government provides the House interior committee with more details, Nouris said.
