Some 200 new recruits are expected on Monday in Larnaca, and by Friday around 2,000 of them are expected. Defence Minister Savvas Angelides, who visited the camp on Monday morning and was briefed on the process, expressed his satisfaction with the number of arrivals.
In a statement the minister welcomed the recruits to the “big family of the national guard” and assured “both them and their families that all the instructions have been given and all the necessary measures have been taken to ensure their health, safety and respect for their dignity.
“It is a 14-month term and recruits must take advantage of all the experiences and knowledge of this education so that they will be protected from difficulties they will face later in society,” the minister said.
Regarding the recruiting process, Angelides said that “everything seems to be going smoothly” though some of the future soldiers take advantage and arrive on the last day of Friday, something that creates some difficulties.
He congratulated the approximately 100 new recruits who had arrived by 11am in Larnaca, saying they came with a smile ready to serve. Recruits are also filing in to camps in Paphos and Limassol.
Asked if there are problems with those trying to dodge military service this year, he said that when the process is completed, he will see if there are such cases, adding “we are taking measures constantly and our effort is to decrease the amount of dodgers.”
Angelides explained the reduction of the term from 26 months to 14 months in itself means there are less young men trying to avoid service, but added more needs to be done to ensure that dodging will decrease while ensuring that those who have a real problem are not victimised.
With this in mind, rules have been amended and a new committee for psychological evaluation has been created.
The new recruits will be sworn in on July 18 and on July 20 the soldiers will return to the camps where they will serve.
